Sudan Unrest a Coincidence

Simian Practicalist

This seems to be the era of coincidences.

The Sudanese military is battling the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), basically what looks like an attempted coup.

Of course this is familiar…

On 31 July 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree “On approval of the Maritime Doctrine of the Russian Federation”. One need not be an expert strategist to see that Russia has much coastline but lacks warmwater ports. That is one reason why Russia will never give up Syria with port access to the Mediterranean Sea.

It also makes sense that Russia would want port access in Sudan—the two countries having ties for decades—in proximity to the Suez Canal and access to the Red Sea and in turn the Indian Ocean.

The US doesn’t like it and said so in September 2022.

In February 2023, Russia and Sudan were still at least talking about the port and it is true that Sudan has their own issues but the timing of this mess is suspicious at best.

Keep in mind Sleepy Joe in effect said he didn’t like Nord Stream 2 either.
